Facebook gamers are eagerly awaiting several new game releases, one of the most anticipated being CastleVille, the latest installment in Zynga’s “ville” franchise, which began with FarmVille and continued with FishVille, FrontierVille, and CityVille. No release date for CastleVille has been announced, but the company provided several sneak peeks and created a Facebook page to showcase some of the screenshots and interviews with the team that built it. Although CastleVille will build upon concepts that most Facebook gamers will already be very familiar with, it’s grander in scale and will introduce many more traditional fantasy and roleplaying elements to the world of social games.
Much of the gameplay and mechanics remain a secret, but here’s what the company has revealed so far. You can build your castle in a fantasy medieval world, show it to your friends, and craft things like potions or armor. Another major feature of the game is the storyline, which is an integral part of the experience. You can trade and barter with friends by visiting their towns. No fantasy or medieval game is complete without combat, and there will be plenty of bad guys to fight. All sorts of beasties live outside of your castle and you and your friends will have to beat the back to expand your kingdom. There is lots of exploration in the game and the storyline is customized based on the actions you take. A lot of the game is driven through your interactions with the main characters. Your goal will be to make them happy and then unlock new interactions. Your kingdom represents a beacon of happiness, and outside your borders lies what’s known as the “gloom,” an area of unhappiness and misfortune that you try to conquer.
A significant departure from the standard “Ville” games is that interactions with non-player characters will become very important and you’ll need to interact with many of them. One character you’ll meet is George the friendly miner and one of the others is is Tom, an old knight who will help you on your quests. And no fairy-tale would be complete without a beautiful princess. In CastleVille, that’s Giselle. Although characters have been introduced in many social games before, they’re usually used only as part of the tutorial or as a proxy “friend” and ultimately, you don’t interact with them that much. In CastleVille, interacting with the different characters will be an integral part of the game.
And it wouldn’t be a Facebook game without a lot of social elements. Friends will be able to assist in building and decorating your castle, and you’ll be able to show off your progress. The ability to trade and swap items is a huge part of the game. Another new feature will be crafting. You will be able to make special items to use for your own needs or to share with friends. There are lots of beasties to fight in the game, and you’ll need the help of your friends to defeat some of the bigger and nastier meanies in the game.
The game will adapt and change based on the decisions you make while playing. Self-expression, storytelling and the narrative will all be a key aspect of the game. The game is a very ambitious product with lots of quality artwork and polish never before seen in a social game on Facebook.
If you’ve been bored with all the copycat games on Facebook as of late, get ready for a new and wonderful adventure with CastleVille.
